    Chloroquine exoerythrocytic

Chloroquine has been extensively used in mass drug administrations, which may have contributed to the emergence and spread of resistance. It is recommended to check if chloroquine is still effective in the region prior to using it.

Chloroquine is not active against the gametocytes and the exoerythrocytic forms including the hypnozoite stage P. vivax and P. ovale of the Plasmodium parasites. In vitro studies with Chloroquine demonstrated that it is active against the trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica. CHLOROQUINE PHOSPHATE, USP DESCRIPTION ARALEN, chloroquine phosphate, USP, is a 4-aminoquinoline compound for oral administration. It is a white, odorless, bitter tasting, crystalline substance, freely soluble in water. ARALEN is an antimalarial and amebicidal drug. Chloroquine is active against the erythrocytic forms of Plasmodium vivax. Plasmodium malariae, and susceptible strains of Plasmodium falciparum but not the gametocytes of P. falciparum. It is not effective against exoerythrocytic forms of the parasite.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.
