    Describe eye tests for plaquenil

In Sjögren’s, Plaquenil is used to treat many symptoms of Sjögren’s including fatigue, joint symptoms of arthritis and arthralgias (joint pain), dry mouth and dry eyes. Similar to its use in systemic lupus erythematosus, many clinicians feel that it is useful in reducing general Sjögren’s “disease activity.” One of the reasons that physicians feel comfortable in prescribing Plaquenil is its low risk to benefit ratio.

Back on nov 5 i think it was i felt there was a really good discussion about hydroxychlorouine & eye tests here. One of us posted detailed info about her experience & the different types of eye test anyone on plaquenil etc would probably be best to have, and the frequency. This toxicity affects a part of the eye called the retina and can lead to color blindness and even loss of vision. An ophthalmologist eye specialist often can detect changes in the retina that suggest toxicity before serious damage occurs. Therefore, regular eye examinations, even when there are no symptoms, are mandatory.

As with any medication, allergic reactions including skin rashes and non-allergic reactions can occur. This means that the side effects of Plaquenil are mild and infrequent compared with its potential benefits.

Plaquenil is a drug used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosis. It is a very good drug and gives many patients significant relief from their symptoms. Plaquenil related eye complications are not common. Plaquenil can produce pigment changes in the macula of the retina. Apr 20, 2011 In 2002, the American Academy of Ophthalmology AAO established ocular examination guidelines for screening patients on Plaquenil therapy. Testing included a comprehensive eye exam that consisted of an assessment of the posterior segment with careful evaluation of associated macular changes or signs of retinal disease. 4 Baseline fundus. I am lucky as a rheumatologist in practice for more than 30 years to have only had one malpractice lawsuit. But it was for alleged Plaquenil related eye toxicity, and believe me, attornies will grab any guideline they can as "Standard-of-Care" if it suits their case. All to say, we treat patients, not guidelines, but we all need to aware of these.

Has anyone experienced plaquenil toxicity with damage to eyes? I have been taking plaquenil for a little over 10 years and getting eye exams regularly. Suddenly I'm experiencing eye problems blilnd spots. I have stopped taking plaquenil, but now I'm being told by doctors that the damage is not necessarily reversible especially if you have taken it for a long time.
